Glossary of Terms for Dedicated Workboard Holders


Term

Definition
At InsertionThe position of the PCB at the moment the electronic components are inserted into it.
At LoadingThe position of the PCB at the moment it is placed into the workboard holder by the operator.
Axial Component An electronic component consisting of two wire leads separated by a cylindrical component body, e.g., resistors and diodes.
Board Error Correction (BEC)Any device used for detecting inaccurate positioning of component lead holes in a PCB and adjusting the insertion program accordingly.
BEC on All Components When the device used to detect inaccurate positioning of component lead holes is used at every component insertion event. Generally used for PCBs that do not have a repeatable pattern of inaccuracy.
BEC on First ComponentWhen the device used to detect inaccurate positioning of component lead holes is used at the first component insertion event and the entire pattern program is adjusted based on the deviation of the hole from its nominal position. Generally used for PCBs that have a repeatable pattern of inaccuracy.
Bushing Span The center-to-center distance of the bushing inserts in the automatic component insertion machine’s rotary table for pinning the workboard holder to the machine.
Cut and Clinch UnitA component of an automatic component insertion machine that, at the point the component in inserted into the PCB, rises up from below the PCB, supports the PCB, and cuts and clinches the component to the PCB. Because there are a number of different cut and clinch sizes, it is important for the workboard holder designer to know what cut and clinch unit is being used so the proper clearance is provided on the workboard holder.
Dual In-Line Package (DIP) ComponentAn electronic component consisting of two sets of wire leads separated by a rectangular component body, typically containing from 6 to 42 leads.
Family of PCBsTwo or more PCBs that share common outer dimensions and common tooling hole locations, but have different component locations.
PCBPrinted Circuit Board
Posi-LocA spring stop assembly that has a plunger with a notch for positive PCB hold-down. The notch is the same dimension as the PCB thickness.
Radial ComponentAn electronic component with two or three wire leads emanating from the component body that is designed to stand up on the PCB by its leads, e.g., transistors, capacitors, hairpin axial components, etc.
Rotary TableThe large, round metal disc held horizontally on an automatic component insertion machine designed to mount the workboard holder to the machine and to allow the workboard holder to rotate.
Round Nose Spring StopA spring stop assembly that has a spherical plunger face.
Spring StopA spring-loaded hold-down to retain the PCB on the workboard holder while it goes through the automatic component insertion process.
Taper-LocA spring stop assembly that has a plunger with a tapered face.
Tooling HoleA hole in a PCB that has close tolerances for hole diameter and accurate location in relation to the component insertion holes.
Tooling PinA pin on a workboard holder that holds the PCB in proper position by closely fitting into a tooling hole. Generally, the tooling pin diameter is 0.0015” smaller than the nominal tooling hole dimension of the PCB.
Tooling Pin, FlatA pin on a workboard holder that holds the PCB in proper position by closely fitting into a tooling hole. This pin has flats machined on two sides of the pin to aid PCB removal from the workboard holder.
Tooling Pin, RoundA pin on a workboard holder that holds the PCB in proper position by closely fitting into a tooling hole.
Variable Center Distance (VCD)Refers to axial component insertion on an automatic component insertion machine that has the capability of varying the center-to-center distance of the leads.
Workboard Holder (WBH)A fixture used to hold a PCB accurately in position, with regard to height and location, on an automatic component insertion machine. Generally consists of an aluminum plate with tooling pins to locate the PCB and spring stops for hold-down.
Worst Case PCBGenerally, a PCB from a family of PCBs that has the most components on the outer edges.
#1 PinThe first lead on a DIP component. The first lead is to the left of the reference mark on the body of the component.
180° RotationA workboard holder designed in such a way that the PCB(s) in the rear half of the fixture are presented 180° from the PCB(s) in the front half of the fixture, rotated at about the center of the fixture.
90° RotationA workboard holder designed in such a way that the PCB(s) in the lower left of the fixture are presented four times in 90° increments, rotated at about the center of the fixture.
