Universal Instruments and Tsinghua University Launch First Book on “SMT Technology and Equipment”

Universal Instruments and Tsinghua University today proudly present the first ever Chinese SMT textbook in the industry -- “SMT Technology and Equipment” which is set to help develop the SMT industry in China.

June 30, 2008 - “SMT Technology and Equipment” is the fruit of the joint efforts of Universal Instruments and Tsinghua-Flextronics SMT Lab who formed an editorial committee comprising members from both sides and other leading experts in the industry. It aims at grooming local talents, especially high school students and junior staff in the industry. In addition, the book is also a collection of the research papers done by experts from Universal Instruments and Tsinghua University in the past years. It will soon become a useful guide for SMT engineers.

Mr Heinz Dommel, Asia General Manager, Universal Instruments, said at the ceremony: “As a leading player in the electronics industry with over 90 years of experience in research and product development, not only do we offer the best-in-class surface mount platforms and technology to our customers, but also the best support to local SMT education.

“Since 2006, we worked with Tsinghua University which is one of the leading high schools in the world to promote SMT education. The launch of ‘SMT Technology and Equipment’ today marks another milestone in our collaboration,” he added.

Mr Xu Xiaotian, secretary-general of China Semiconductor Association highly recognised the joint efforts made by Universal Instruments and Tsinghua University towards local SMT education which laid a strong foundation for the development of the whole industry.

Given the fact that SMT was an advanced technology growing with more sophistication, it required closer collaboration between corporations and universities to keep abreast of time, he added.

Prof Li Hongru, Vice-director of Fundamental Industrial Training Centre of Tsinghua University, said, “Given the growing importance of knowledge and technology in modern economy, it is very important for high schools and large corporations to work together to contribute towards the growth of the economy. We are looking forward to further co-operation with Universal Instruments.”

“SMT Technology and Equipment” covers a wide range of topics, including basics of SMT technology, critical success factors of SMT machines, structure and characteristics of different types of SMT machines, usage and maintenance of SMT platforms, and advanced SMT technologies. It is ideal for both staff training and students’ reference. It is also a useful guide for industry workers.

Universal Instruments began its co-operation with Tsinghua University in 2006 by developing a post-graduate course on “Microelectronics and SMT”, speaking at students seminars, guiding graduate students, and offering internship opportunities for Tsinghua students. The collaboration also provides new insights for academic research.
